Did you know that Arizona has more gemstones than any other state? Turquoise and Peacock can be found in the Tombstone area. If you’ve been to any of the local stores you will see some of the beautiful ¬†jewellery crafted with great skill.
Tombstone, of course, was built on silver, literally! – High grade (red) silver ore estimated at $30,000,000 was extracted from the Good Enough Mine which still exists under the streets of Tombstone. If you explore the area around the town you will come across hundreds of mine shafts where individual prospectors desperately hunted for their fortunes. Silver ore can still be found in the area but unfortunately the cost of mining the silver would far outweigh the value it could bring. But . . . if you’re enthusiastic and have a keen eye, hunting for silver ore and even gold ore can make an entertaining day out. Prospectors looked for Crystolla which accumulates wherever gold and silver are found. It’s a soft stone, green in colour and is also made into very pretty jewellery. Good luck hunting!
